SPACECOMM was co-founded in 1998 by Colonel (Ret) Michael J. Varner as a forum for government and industry to exchange information, technical advancements, and increase cooperation in supporting military preparedness in the C4ISR domains. The first symposium was held January 26-28, 1999 at the Sheraton Hotel in Colorado Springs, CO. The first meeting was attended by some 350 and has grown to over 1200 attendees and exhibitors. In the first three years the symposium outgrew the capacity of the Sheraton and in 2003 the symposium moved to The Broadmoor Hotel. SpaceComm is the premier C4ISR symposium of its kind in the nation.
The top communicators from all Services, numerous Agencies, and Commands present their top priorities and strategic vision. Each year the event focuses on relevant space, homeland security and defense C4ISR topics. The event is logistically supported by N-NC, AFSPC, and SMDC. The event is also supported by the highly valued industry partners who bring in first-class exhibits. The exhibit hall is filled with displays representing over 60 DoD vendors. It is a prime opportunity for companies to network with integrated architecture developers, the DoD, as well as other federal agencies. It also gives defense vendors the opportunity to show how they support homeland defense, space systems, information operations, command and control, and other aspects of the C4ISR domains.
A highlight of SPACECOMM is the annual presentation of the North American Information Technology Leadership Award given to an international leader in the IT community. The first recipient and co-sponsor of the event was Lt Gen (Ret) Harry D. Raduege, Jr. Since then VADM Mike McConnell (USN, Ret), former Director NIA; LTGEN Robert Shea (USMC, Ret), JCS/J6 and LTG Stephen Boutelle (USA, Ret), Army/G6 have received the award. 2008's recipient will be announced soon, with the award presentation at the 10th Anniversary SPACECOMM Honor's Luncheon at the Broadmoor Hotel on Thursday, 31 January 2008.
